Luis Suarez was left in tears after being given an emotional send off by Atletico Madrid fans in his final home game for the club.

It has been confirmed that the 35-year-old will depart the Spanish capital this summer following the expiration of his contract.

After the game, Atletico Madrid’s players formed a guard of honour for Suarez and midfielder Hector Herrera, who is also leaving the club.

Suarez joined Atletico in 2020 and scored 21 goals in his debut campaign to help Los Rojiblancos win the league title.

This season has not been as successful, with the striker scoring on only 11 occasions and Atletico due to finish either third or fourth.

‘He came to try to remain at the top, to show how competitive he is,’ Diego Simeone said on Sunday. ‘He helped us, and we helped him to win LaLiga where he was decisive due to his forcefulness.

‘This season, despite not playing the games he would have wanted, he is still the team’s top scorer.

‘I wish him the best, with absolute gratitude to an extraordinary footballer and to a person who goes beyond a footballer.’

Suarez is expected to make a decision on his future in the next couple of weeks, having been linked with a shock return to Barcelona.

The 35-year-old previously spent six years at Barca and is the third-highest scorer in the club’s history, but left the Nou Camp under turbulent circumstances two years ago.

Then-manager Ronald Koeman told Suarez that he was no longer required at the club and that he needed to be sold to help ease their financial crisis.

However, according to El Chiringuito reporter Jose Alvarez Haya, the Uruguayan wants to return under current boss Xavi and ‘would be willing to lower his salary and adapt it to the needs of Barcelona’.
