‘Lycra lout’, 55, filmed unleashing torrent of abuse at pregnant driver is revealed

A cyclist who launched a shocking foul mouth tirade at a pregnant woman during a confrontation over the Highway Code has insisted: ‘I’m not the bad guy’.

Builder Dave Parker was accused of breaching the code by riding two abreast ‘in the middle’ of a road in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire – even though he was seemingly in the right.

The confrontation was filmed by a passenger in the car and has been shared more than 600 times on social media.

In the footage, he leans towards the car window and rants at the pregnant woman, calling her a ‘f***ing stupid c***’.

The 55-year-old, who was out cycling with wife Samantha when they were captured on camera, has now told The Sun the row was ‘twisted’ and that he wasn’t to blame despite his aggressive language.

The father, of Louth, Lincs, said: ‘I don’t want to talk about it. I am getting too much stick – it is unbelievable.

‘Initially, [the driver] nearly knocked me and my wife off our bikes. But it does not show all that. But I am the bad guy aren’t I?’

The cyclist insists that he was ‘doing nothing wrong’ during his tirade, shouting at the woman through the partially open window.

He says: ‘What? A bike is allowed on the f***ing road.’

The woman responds, saying: ‘If you actually look in the Highway Code you can see that you’re not allowed two abreast.’

But what does the Highway Code say?

Section 66 of the Highway Code says that cyclists ‘should not’ ‘ride more than two abreast’ but instead ‘ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends’.

But this is an advisory rule and there is no law in place to prevent cyclists from doing so.

The code also states that cyclists can ride in the centre of a lane to deter unsafe passes, particularly on slower, urban roads.

Section 67 also says that if cyclists are going to move away from the kerb, they should ‘look all around’ first ‘to make sure it is safe to do so’. They are also told to give a clear signal ‘to show other road users what you intend to do’.

But the man argues that the code states that cyclists can go ‘double file’ on a 30mile-an-hour road, before swearing at the woman and seemingly storming off.

Section 66 of the Highway Code advises cyclists not to ‘ride more than two abreast’ but instead ‘ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends’.

The code also states that cyclists can ride in the centre of a lane to deter unsafe passes, particularly on slower, urban roads – seemingly proving the cyclist was correct.

Riding in the middle of the road, or taking the ‘primary position’, is adopted by cyclists when passing parked cars whose doors may suddenly open, to prevent traffic overtaking dangerously in narrow roads and when manoeuvring or turning.

It is understood that the confrontation began after the driver sounded the horn at the cyclist for ‘holding cars up’.

The cyclist then reportedly ‘followed the car’ into Cleethorpes Country Park.

A video of the incident was uploaded on social media with an appeal to trace down the cyclist.

The post was captioned: ‘Does anyone know this man please?

‘Was in the middle of the road, two people.

‘Then when bibbed at because was holding cars up, he was throwing up hand signals.

‘Deliberately cycled slower and was all over the road then followed the car and very violent and aggressive.’

The cyclist caused fury on social media, with users saying there was ‘no need to speak to her like that’, whether he was in ‘right or wrong’.

One user said: ‘While the guy’s behaviour is completely disgusting, he is correct.

‘We are allowed in the middle of the roads and are allowed to cycle two wide.

‘You have to treat cyclists just like you would a motorbike or another car.’

Another user said: ‘There is no need for him to be so arrogant about it. It gives cyclists a bad reputation.’

Others have compared the cyclist to Ronnie Pickering, who became a sensation after infamously shouting ‘do you know who I am?’ at a moped rider.

The bewildered rider responded ‘who?’ after the man said he was ‘Ronnie Pickering’.

One person said: ‘Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, there is no need for such aggression and disgusting language.’
