Lynda Spargo in coma dying of breast cancer

A teacher, who has been in a coma since she collapsed at school with a brain haemorrhage, may never wake up to be told she’s dying of breast cancer.

Mother-of-three Lynda Spargo, 48, from Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, collapsed at her workplace just days before the start of the summer holidays.

The Sherard Primary School teacher was rushed to hospital on July 14 after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

Doctors at Leicester Royal Infirmary stabilised and assessed her, but Mrs Spargo was moved to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre, where she underwent several operations before suffering a major seizure.

Over the weeks the family saw signs of improvement but she did not regain consciousness.

Then doctors detected a tumour in her breast, but told her husband Nick, 46, that they would not be able to treat the cancer due to her condition.

Now, heartbroken Mr Spargo has admitted they are looking for a nursing home where she can see out her last days.

The firefighter whose world has been turned upside down, said: ‘We are just waiting for her to die, really.’

The tragedy comes only two years ago the couple’s teenage daughter Kayti underwent life saving treatment for cancer in the US.

Mr Spargo, a firefighter for 15 years, posted on a crowdfunding page: ‘There’s no easy way to say this. Lynda has breast cancer, she’s having a CT scan today to see if it’s spread.

‘She’ll be moving out of the hospital and going to a care home in about a month.

‘Lynda is stable, the cancer hasn’t spread but they’re not willing to operate as it’ll be too traumatic. They’re hoping to move Lynda to a nursing home by December. Lynda will never come home.’

He said: ‘I’ve still been at work all the way through, apart from three days off sick. Friends and family have been helping look after the kids and helping us get things sorted.

‘The fire service has been brilliant from top to bottom with moving my shifts and covering for me. I’m also trying to keep running a carpet cleaning business I’ve set up.

‘It’s been a struggle, the kids have had to grow up fast and become independent.

‘We are coping as a family and getting on with it. It’s brought us closer as a family, but it’s been a challenge.’

The double tragedy comes two years after Kayti, then 16, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer affecting 60 children a year in the UK.

After 10 weeks of specialist proton beam therapy, targeting a tumour behind her nose at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, in Jacksonville, she was given the all clear in September, 2015.

Kaisey Lambert, whose mother, Wendy, is a close friend of Mrs Spargo, has set up the crowd funding page to help Nick, his two teenage sons and a daughter through the crisis

Kaisey, 21, said: ‘Mum and Lynda are close friends and we all know Nick and Lynda’s children.

‘I was moved by what has happened to the family. I would just like to think that if you were ever in the same situation other people would do the same.’
