A car slamming into a tree on the M1 has caused delays stretching up to three kilometres.
The driver slammed into a tree on the side of the road at North Wahroonga on Friday at 5pm leaving commuters stranded in both directions.
The driver was airlifted to hospital following the accident, a NSW Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

A spokesperson from NSW Ambulance said the driver was in a critical condition.
The driver is believed to be in his 40s and have head injuries, according to Seven News.
One lane was closed in each direction briefly as a medical helicopter attended the scene.
Commuters are advised to exercise caution and allow extra time to get to their destination.
