MAC Cosmetics set to launch makeup collection inspired by Aaliyah

In the late 1990s, there were few starlets that exuded sultry glamour quite like R&B legend Aaliyah.

So, it’s no surprise that nearly 17 years after her untimely death that her fans are still enthralled with her iconic style – and that brands are trying to help customers replicate it.

MAC Cosmetics might just have such a resolution, having announced a release date for its latest line of products inspired by the Try Again singer, dubbed the #AaliyahforMac collaboration.

So far, the brand has announced a nine-piece eye shadow palette and a single nude lipstick as a part of the line.

The lipstick is a peach-nude color, a shade very typical of the singer, while the eye shadow palette focuses on rich browns, golds, and pink shades. Both products are housed in maroon packaging bearing Aaliyah’s signature.

The collection has been a long time coming, and is still a long way off, slated for an in-store release date of June 20 and online drop date of June 21.

Mac announced the official collection’s date in an Instagram post boasting a black and white photo of Aaliyah wearing a single chandelier-shaped earring.

‘Aaliyah super-fans everywhere – YOU made it happen!’ read the announcement, referring to a petition hoping for the collaboration collected more than 26,000 signatures.

‘Inspired by your loyalty and love, the 90s-glam #AaliyahForMAC collection launches on maccosmetics.com on June 20th and in-stores in North America on June 21st! Aaliyah lives on in a makeup collection influenced by her groundbreaking work in music and film.’

In addition to the massive fan backing, the collection is supported by Aaliyah’s family, including her brother Rashad Haughton, as well as the singer’s very own glam squad, made up of:  Eric Ferrell (makeup), Tre Major (hair) and Fashion Stylist Derek Lee.

Missy Elliot, who was a good friend of the star, has also thrown her support behind the collaboration.

The products will be hitting stores just two months shy of the 17th anniversary of the tragic plane crash that took the lives of Aaliyah and eight others on August 25, 2001.

She and her team of stylists, security and record company employees were killed when their overloaded aircraft crashed shortly after take-off at the Marsh Harbour Airport on the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas. The group had been in the area filming the music video for Rock the Boat.

A subsequent investigation found that in addition to the plane carrying more than 700lbs more than it was supposed to, the pilot wasn’t properly licensed for that particular aircraft and was also found to have alcohol and cocaine in his bloodstream.
