Mack Horton says he is ‘overwhelmed’ after receiving supportive messages from around the world after swim cheat Sun Yang eight-year ban from the sport

  • Chinese swimmer Sun Yang was banned from the pool for eight years on Friday
  • Mack Horton said he is ‘overwhelmed with the decision’ after receiving support

Australian swimmer Mack Horton has spoken out following Sun Yang’s eight-year ban from the sport.

Sun, a three-time Olympic champion, was on Friday found guilty by the Court of Arbitration for Sport for refusing to cooperate with sample collectors during a visit to his home in September 2018.

However, swimming legends said the ban isn’t punishment enough and have slammed the decision to allow Sun to keep his gold medals for the 200m and 400m freestyle from the 2019 world championships.

Following the groundbreaking decision, Horton said he has been ‘overwhelmed’ with messages of support.

‘I think regardless of the outcome it was always going to be a statement to the world and my stance has always been about clean sport never about nations or individuals,’ Horton told 7NEWS.

‘It goes on,’ he said, after being asked if he was relieved.

‘I’m just a guy still chasing the dream… we’ve got a job to do this morning and we’ll just keep going.’

More to come.
