Macklemore calls NRL performance a great honour

He defiantly played his same-sex marriage anthem ‘Same Love’ before the NRL grand final on Sunday night.

And now Macklemore has highlighted the performance as one of the greatest honours of his illustrious career.

Taking to Twitter after his energetic display, the rap artist expressed his sense of pride at being given the opportunity to play the song.

Humbled: Macklemore calls his NRL grand final performance as one of his ‘greatest honours’ after defiantly belting out marriage equality anthem Same Love

‘Performing Same Love at the #NRLGF was one of the greatest honours of my career,’ the 34-year-old wrote.

‘Thank you @NRL for the opportunity & supporting equality.’

The Grammy Award-winner performed the hit song in front of as many as 80,000 people despite criticism from Tony Abbott, Bob Katter and thousands of ‘No’ voters for mixing politics with sport.

The former prime minister took to Twitter last week to voice his opposition to the song, saying fans shouldn’t be subjected to the agenda.

‘Footy fans shouldn’t be subjected to a politicised grand final. Sport is sport,’ he said.

Macklemore responded to the comments in a radio interview, dismissing the idea he wouldn’t perform the song.

‘It’s interesting actually cause I’m gonna play Same Love and they’re going through trying to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia,’ he said.

‘So I’m getting a lot of tweets from angry old white dudes in Australia. Today I think there is a petition to ban me from playing.’
