Macklemore slams petition to ban Same Love from NRL final

His ‘gay anthem’ Same Love soared back to number one on the charts after thousands protested its use at the NRL grand final.

And now Macklemore has voiced his pleasure at the result, declaring ‘Love is winning’.

The American rapper took to Twitter on Friday morning to slam the creation of a petition – backed by sentiments from Tony Abbott – that attempts to ban the song being performed on Sunday.

‘Yesterday someone started a petition in Australia to ban me from playing Same Love at the #NRLGF,’ he wrote.

‘Today its #1 on iTunes. Love is winning.’

The five-year-old song climbed to the top spot of Australia’s iTunes charts on Thursday night, followed by Macklemore’s newest track ‘Good Old Days’, which sat at number two.

‘Same Love’, a song celebrating same-sex relationships, first hit number one in Australia in 2013.

However, an online petition with 14,050 supporters have called for NRL chief exective Todd Greenberg to dump the hit from its grand final performance.

‘Footy fans shouldn’t be subjected to a politicised grand final. Sport is sport,’ the former prime minister wrote on Twitter.

Former NRL player Tony Wall started the petition demanding the ‘LGBTIQ anthem’ shouldn’t be played because it was a ‘bold political stance’.

‘It will be very difficult to watch the NRL grand final with my wife and five young children as the event will be heavily politicised with a LGBTIQ anthem taking centre stage,’ Mr Wall wrote on change.org.

Macklemore hit back at critics overnight during a radio interview with The Cruz Show.

‘It’s interesting actually cause I’m gonna play Same Love and they’re going through trying to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia,’ the Thrift Shop hitmaker said.
