Longtime stage and TV actress Cynthia Harris died in Greenwich Village, New York City on Sunday at the age of 87, it was shared on Wednesday.

The cause of death has not yet been revealed, her family announced on Legacy. ‘Cynthia’s passing is a great loss for the dramatic arts and for all of us,’ it was added.

The actress is best known for playing Paul Reiser’s mother Sylvia Buchman on the hit sitcom Mad About You which also starred Oscar-winning actress Helen Hunt.

Cynthia also worked on the 2019 revival of the series.

And she was a fixture on 1970s TV shows such as Three’s Company and Laverne & Shirley.

One of her more notable roles was as Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson in the 1979 miniseries Edward & Mrs. Simpson.

The popular show was about a married New York couple (Reiser and Hunt) who trade barbs while trying to keep their marriage in tact.

Cynthia’s roots were in New York theater.

Her first was the play Natural Affection in 1963. 

Some of her highlights were Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company, Terrence McNally’s Bad Habits and The Tribute Artist. 

Guest starring roles on TV shows followed as she popped up on the beloved The Bob Newhart Show, and worked with Penny Marshall on Laverne & Shirley.

She was also seen with John Ritter on the slapstick 70s series Three’s Company as well as the black comedy Archie Bunker’s Place with Carroll O’Connor.

And she popped up opposite Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers an episode of Hart To Hart. 

Later she worked on several episodes as Iris Hubbard of the crime show Law & Order and was also seen on the soap opera All My Children.

She became the artistic director and co-founder of the Actors Company Theater in 1993.

The performer was married to theater producer Eugene Wolsk from 1961 until their divorce in 1972.

Harris was survived by her partner Nathan Silverstein, her assistant Terrence Mintern, her brother Dr. Matthew Harris, her sister-in-law Maryjane Harris and several nieces and nephews.

Om Legacy it says, ‘To offer your sympathy during this difficult time, you can now have memorial trees planted in a National Forest in memory of your loved one.’
