MAFS fans divided over Ines Basic’s ‘Hollywood’ court appearance

Married At First Sight fans are divided over Ines Basic’s sensational court appearance in Brisbane on Tuesday, with some branding her ‘delusional’ while others claim it was a successful PR stunt.

The 29-year-old legal assistant had pleaded guilty to mid-range drink driving at  Cleveland Magistrates Court and was sentenced to 70 hours of community service and disqualified from driving for three months.

But it was her ‘Hollywood-style’ arrival at court – complete with bodyguard, Mercedes-Benz limousine and all-black designer ensemble – that sparked fierce debate on social media.

Ines has blocked comments on her Instagram account, so people instead flocked to the popular ‘MAFS Funny’ fan page to discuss her legal dramas.

Many expressed disbelief that her guilty plea attracted widespread media attention and also criticised her snooty attitude towards reporters outside the courthouse.

One person wrote: ‘They are treating her like a celebrity. Come on, seriously she’s some halfwit who was on TV for like a minute!’

Similar comments included: ‘What’s with the bodyguard? This bird things she’s a star’, ‘Reminds me of a Chris Lilley character’, ‘She thinks she’s a huge star… this is not LA’, and ‘[She’s] walking around like she’s actually important’.

However, Ines had plenty of supporters who said her sharply-dressed court appearance made them ‘love her even more’.

Praise for Ines included, ‘[She’s a] hot mess’, ‘Love her so much’, ‘I f**king love her! So funny’, and ‘This is so iconic’.

The footage fans were reacting to showed Ines walking out of court, before being confronted by reporters who asked her if she ‘had a drinking problem’ or was ‘sorry’ for her actions.

Ines did not respond and instead walked straight from the courthouse into a waiting car with her entourage.

Just moments earlier, she had been sentenced to 70 hours of community service and disqualified from driving for three months after pleading guilty to drink driving.

On Christmas Day last year, the 29-year-old legal assistant got drunk on vodka and rammed her vehicle into her sister Ena’s car as it was parked in the driveway of her Redland Bay home, 9News reported.

Ines’s lawyer Ivan Sayad explained that his client’s behaviour was the result of being ‘ridiculed’ by her sister for appearing on reality TV.

Ines herself had defiantly told the court: ‘I would never drink and drive, but the b***h pissed me off!’

According to the prosecutor, Ines had been ‘carrying on like an idiot’ and screaming obscenities during the incident, which took place at around 7pm on December 25.

She had been drinking vodka since 10am and, following her argument with her sister about appearing on MAFS, yelled: ‘I’m gonna f**king burn your f**king house down!’

After police arrived at the scene, Ines called them ‘c**ts’ and told a female officer, ‘F**king arrest me then, b**ch!’

In sentencing, Magistrate Deborah Vasta told Ines to ‘get some perspective on life’ and branded her an ‘absolute brat’.

Vasta hoped the community service would help Ines understand the ‘real fabric of society’ and escape from the ‘bubble of artificiality’ she has been living in.

She had previously been pictured arriving at court in a limousine wearing a black pantsuit, blazer and stiletto heels while flanked by her own personal bodyguard.

Looking every inch the reality star, Ines concealed her gaze behind a pair of designer sunglasses and appeared to sport a fresh spray tan.

She styled her brunette hair in a tight ponytail and looked stony faced as she was escorted from the parking lot into the courthouse.

In total, Ines pleaded guilty to a mid-range drink driving offence, driving without due care, being a public nuisance and contravening the direction or requirement of police officer.

The latter charge was the result of Ines giving police the false name, ‘Vanessa Dorothy Ines’.

To be charged with a mid-range drink driving offense, someone must register a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of over 0.10 per cent but under 0.15 per cent.

Mid-range drink driving is the second most serious drink driving offence under Queensland law and carries a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment and/or a 20 penalty unit fine for a first offence.

Following her court appearance on Tuesday, Ines met her lawyer at the nearby Elysium Restaurant and Bar.
