Malcolm Turnbull kicks off his retirement with a walk with his wife Lucy and daughter Daisy

Malcolm Turnbull has officially welcomed his first day of retirement by sharing a photo of himself on an early-morning walk in Canberra with his family. 

The former PM was all smiles as embarked on the early-morning stroll – despite the rainy, cold weather – and briefly stopping atop a hill to capture the moment.

In the photo, Mr Turnbull is seen alongside his wife, Lucy, daughter, Daisy, and son-in-law, Australian army veteran James Brown.

The dark and gloomy vista in the background is reminiscent of the tumultuous week Mr Turnbull has endured, which led to his resignation.

The post garnered plenty of praise for the former PM, with some people thanking him for his time in office.

Another person added: ‘Thank you for your service Mr Turnbull. Glad Scomo got the job, not that other blok. Enjoy your family and grandies.’

‘I feel proud and blessed to have had you as our PM!!!!! You did an awesome job Mr. Turnbull,’ a third wrote.

Mr Turnbull relinquished his role as Prime Minister after a week of bitter infactional fighting with his Liberal colleagues – 43 of which signed a petition to have him ousted.

Among those who signed were Andrew Hastie, Tony Pasin, Craig Kelly, Michael Sukkar, Kevin Andrews, Ian Goodenough, Nicolle Flint, Peter Dutton and Jason Wood.

In his farewell speech, Mr Turnbull said he did everything within his power to maintain stability within the government despite the chaos, but ultimately the ‘wreckers’ prevailed.

The family man added that, despite the drama of the last few days, he has enjoyed his time in politics and is looking forward to getting on with life.

‘I came into politics at the very mature age of 50 and I’ve had a very good time in the Parliament,’ he said immediately after the announcement.

‘I’ve always been focused on what i can deliver for the Australian people. The critical thing is with politics is it’s not about the politicians that’s why this week has been so dispiriting.’

‘It appears to be vengeance, person ambition, factional feuding, whatever you describe it, it hasn’t had anything to do with 25million Australians,’ he said.
