A defiant mother bear has stared down a family whose yells scared her three cubs back into the woods after they wandered across a North Carolina porch – and then she swiped their dog’s bowl full of food.
The moment the bears wander across the backyard of the Loflin home in Banner Elk was caught on film mere moments after their dog started barking and begging to be let inside.
Elizabeth Loflin said the incident, on July 18, happened around 3.30pm – and she was unaware of the unexpected visitors until the dog was let back inside.
‘The second she got outside, she started barking and begging to come in. Not but five minutes later, a mama bear and three cubs climb on our porch and steal dog food,’ Loflin said.
The defiant mother bear inspects the dog food before the Lofler family in Banner Elk, North Carolina, start yelling to scare them away. While her frightened cubs quickly scurried off, mama bear stared them down before swiping their dog’s bowl full of food.
In the video, the mother bear strolls onto the family’s back porch followed by her three cubs.
The mother immediately sniffs out some nearby dog foods and dives right in.
From inside the home, a man tries to scare the bears away by yelling and making loud noises.

It startles the bear family momentarily, sending them scattering in different directions.
The cubs then hightail it towards a patch of nearby woods, but the mother bear makes sure to grab the bowl of dog food before running off behind her babies.
Laughing, the family watches as the bears disappear into the woods.

‘It doesn’t care!’, the man says from inside.
Thomas Loflin told WSOCTV: ‘I thought I was crazy. You’d think in a place where we live, in the wild and everything, you’d see them all the time, but it’s much rarer than you think.’
