Man, 19, is charged after allegedly trying to abduct a girl, 9, from a home in the troubled outback town of Tennant Creek

• Man, 19, has been charged for the alleged abduction of a sleeping nine-year-old
• The little girl was taken from her Tennant Creek home on Sunday, it was alleged
• Police confirmed the man is in custody and will appear at court on Wednesday

A 19-year-old man accused of abducting a little girl from her Tennant Creek home while she slept has been charged.

Northern Territory police allege the sleeping child, nine, was taken from a house on Scheelite Crescent about 12.30am on Sunday.

The incident occurred after the man allegedly socialised at the girl’s home, the ABC reported.

Police said the child then woke outside a nearby unit complex and screamed at the man before fleeing to safety.

She ran home to her family, who notified police.  

The 19-year-old has since been arrested and charged with abduction of a child under 16 years and trespass on enclosed premises.

He remains in custody at the Tennant Creek Watch House and will appear at Alice Springs Local Court on July 22.

Tennant Creek Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident.
