A man is in critical condition with ‘life-changing’ injuries after being dragged from his bed and set alight in Ireland overnight.

Three men armed with machetes and iron bars are thought to have broken into the victim’s house in the city of Mayfield, near Cork, around 4am Monday.

Police say they dragged the 23-year-old from his bed, beat him severely, doused him in petrol and then set him alight.

The attack comes amid a wave of gang violence in Ireland that saw teenager Keane Mulready-Woods killed and dismembered near Dublin a week ago.

The men then fled the scene in two cars as the victim’s panicked family doused the flames and called an ambulance, Cork Beo reports.

The victim was given emergency treatment and rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile police managed to track two vehicle fleeing the scene but lost them on icy roads.

It comes after a 30-year-old man was attacked with a hammer and a baseball bat in Mayfield on Friday night.

The victim suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. Police are investigating both attacks, but have not linked them.

Meanwhile officers on the other side of Ireland are dealing with a surge in gang violence centered around north Dublin and the town of Drogheda.

Three people have been killed – including 17-year-old Keane Mulready-Woods who was dismembered in the town a week ago – as part of an ongoing gang war.

Several more local gang figures have been badly wounded in a series of botched assassination attempts, that has also seen houses petrol bombed and people kidnapped and stabbed.

Police are said to have issued a warrant for a 24-year-old local who is thought to have been involved in the murder of Mulready-Woods.

Suspicion has also fallen on a ‘psychopathic’ 35-year-old north Dublin hitman amid rumours he wanted Mulready-Woods dead in a row over flip flops.
