Man 24 years jail drugging sexually abusing stepdaughter

A Sydney man who sexually abused his stepdaughter from the age of 12 has been sentenced to at least 24 years behind bars after his victim agreed he should be publicly named.

Timothy James Stewart, 45, pleaded guilty to 99 charges relating to the abuse and a jury in July found him guilty of a further 28 offences, including drugging the girl and her mother, and assaulting a younger sister.

Stewart, who represented himself at trial, claimed his abuse of his stepdaughter was consensual and the pair ‘acted like husband and wife’.

On Wednesday, he pleaded unsuccessfully for his name not to be made public.

‘I’m already at high risk of violence (in prison),’ he told District Court Judge Paul Conlon from the dock.

The judge replied: ‘You are in that category as a result of these matters.’

Judge Conlon said the older girl was ‘virtually reduced to an inanimate object’ when she was drugged.

Stewart filmed the abuse for his own sexual gratification and a dozen SD memory cards documenting his actions were found hidden inside the lining of a jacket.

‘This vile and indecent obsession with his stepdaughter … involved an abhorrent breach of trust,’ the judge said.

A victim impact statement read to the court in September shed light on the impact of the prolonged abuse, which the victim described as ‘devastating, profound and far-reaching’.

She remembered her homes as ‘places of terror and distress’ and said she lost a father and ‘unmasked a monster’.

Judge Conlon said while the vast majority of stepfathers would do anything to keep their children safe Stewart’s offending was ‘simply incomprehensible’ and his grooming was ‘total, complete and overwhelming’.

Stewart was sentenced to 32 years in jail with a non-parole period of 24 years.
