A man has been arrested after being spotted by terrified witnesses swinging a sword on the Empire State Building observation deck in New York.

The unnamed 35-year-old was reportedly threatening to kill himself while wielding the cane sword at 4.30pm on Friday, the New York Post reports.

No one was injured it the incident which lasted about 10 minutes.

Authorities responded to the scene in Midtown Manhattan and arrested the man who was reportedly threatening to kill himself

One witness told the New York Post that he believed the man was suicidal and was pointing the sword at his heart.

The man was taken to hospital for psychiatric evaluation. 

It is not known how the man was able to get the sword through the tight security at the famous New York landmark.

Security screening at the Empire State Building is similar to the procedure at airports and includes a metal detector.

Among the items banned in the building are all weapons, glass items, alcohol and suitcases.
