Man, 42, crushed to death by his camper after it was knocked over by 65mph winds in North Dakota

  • Jerry Kellar, 42, of Wilton, North Dakota was crushed by his blown over camper
  • He was staying in his camper near Heckers Lake in McLean County, North Dakota
  • Thursday evening into Friday morning severe rains and strong 65mph winds ripped through the park area, tipping over at least 30 campers
  • Police say Kellar left his camper to secure it to the ground when it flipped on him
  • The camper then continued to roll in the nearby lake  

A North Dakota man was crushed to death by his camper after stormy winds blew the trailer on top of him. 

Jerry Kellar, 42, of Wilton, died around 1am on Friday as he was camping near Heckers Lake in McLean County in North Dakota. 

Kellar stepped outside his camper in the midst of violent 65mph storm winds to tie down his property when the trailer knocked over on top of him, McLean County officials said.

After the camper tipped over it continued to roll into the nearby lake, according to KFYRTV . 

Police were called around 1:12am at a Heckers Lake Campsite. 

When deputies arrived Kellar was already dead. 

Two other injuries were reported, neither life threatening, in wake of the storm.

The severe weather brought heavy rain, large hail, and powerful winds exceeding 65mph to the area near Heckers Lake. 

The storm led to power outages in the area and 30 campers near the lake also tipped over in the storm. 

Sheriff J.R. Jerzmann said trees were downed, bins over turned, and power poles snapped in half as a result of the stormy weather, according to the Bismarck Tribune.
