A pensioner who was shot with a crossbow while trying to fix a satellite dish on his rural home has died in hospital.

Gerald Corrigan was hit by the bolt 22 days ago outside his isolated bungalow near Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales.

The projectile travelled through a significant part of the 74-year-old’s upper body, narrowly missing his heart and then passing through his right arm.

DCI Brian Kearney said in a statement today: ‘This is a truly shocking case and our thoughts are with Gerald’s family and friends at this very sad time.’

He added: ‘The family continue to be supported by Specially Trained Family Liaison Officers.’

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident but no one is believed to have been arrested.  

Mr Corrigan suffered ‘horrendous injuries’ but was able to stagger into his house and phone for an ambulance just after midnight.

Police were called at 2.45am on April 19 after doctors at Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor discovered the projectile.

Hospital staff told officers their patient had sustained injuries consistent with being shot with a crossbow.

Police appealed for anyone with any private CCTV in the area to contact them. 

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Kearney from North Wales Police said after the shooting: ‘The property in in an extremely remote location near to the junction of Porthdafarch Road and Plas Road.

‘He was outside his home as he was attempting to fix a satellite dish when he was hit.

‘He managed to make his way into his home where the alarm was raised at 00:34hrs and colleagues from the Welsh Ambulance Service transported him to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor where he remains in a critical condition.

‘We are appealing to anybody who may have been in the vicinity of South Stack Road between 6pm yesterday evening (Thursday 18) and 4am today to come forward.

‘We are also keen on speaking to anybody who may live in or around that area and who may have private CCTV, or anybody who may have travelled along South Stack Road who may have dash cam footage.

‘We are in the early stages of our investigation and are working hard to establish the circumstances behind this incident. A number of enquiries are underway involving detectives from CID, the local policing teams and Crime Scene Investigation.

‘North West Wales remains one of the safest places in the UK. This is a highly unusual incident for this area and we are determined to find whoever was responsible for this as a matter of urgency.’
