The man accused of mowing down pedestrians in Melbourne’s CBD is due to front court after being charged with 18 counts of attempted murder.

Afghan refugee and Australian citizen Saeed Noori, 32, of Heidelberg West is expected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

He was remanded in custody after a brief court appearance on Saturday.

Two men are still fighting for life, while a total of eight pedestrians remain in hospital nearly a week after the horrifying evening peak hour incident.

Twenty people were hospitalised, including alleged driver Noori and the off duty police officer who arrested him, after a white SUV ploughed through pedestrians crossing Flinders Street on December 21.

Noori, an Afghan refugee and Australian citizen with a history of drug and mental health problems, has been charged with 18 counts of attempted murder and one of conduct endangering life. 

Police allege he acted with ‘the intention of killing or causing serious injury’. 

An 83-year-old Brunswick man and two South Korean men in their 60s were initially listed as critical but one has since improved, police said on Tuesday.  

Noori appeared in court on Saturday and was remanded in custody to reappear on Wednesday.
