Man and woman in their 70s dead after car hit during police chase

Man and woman in their 70s were killed when their car was hit by a van being chased by police in south-east London

  • Vehicle collided with a Citroen C3 in Eltham at just after midnight on Saturday 
  • Paramedics were called to scene but both the man and woman died at scene 
  • The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving  

A man and woman in their 70s have died after their car was hit by a van being chased by police.

Officers spotted the van being ‘driven erratically at speed’ and the vehicle failed the stop.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but both the man and woman died at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the van driver was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the alcohol limit, driving under the influence of drugs and death by dangerous driving.

The officers added the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, as is usual procedure in deaths involving the police.
