A 27-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly made online threats to attack an upcoming Bernie Sanders rally in California.

Jose Rafael Guzman was arrested on Monday after someone spotted his threat online and reported it to police.

Authorities would not say exactly what the threat entailed but that it was directed towards a political rally in Long Beach on Tuesday night.

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is scheduled to hold a rally at Long Beach City College.

His campaign team would not comment on the threat, saying it doesn’t comment on security matters.

Police were first notified of the potential threat on Sunday and they identified Guzman as the suspect the following day.

Guzman, who is a mechanic from Huntington Park, was arrested at his home and booked on suspicion of making criminal threats and threatening a public officer.

He has since been freed after posting $50,000 bond.

“We take all potential threats of violence very seriously and thoroughly investigate all reported incidents,” a police spokesperson said.

“Our department will remain vigilant and continue to be visible to ensure the safety of our community.”

Police said they had already boosted patrols in the wake of the two mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio at the weekend.
