An elderly woman was allegedly ‘savagely attacked’ by an aged care worker at her nursing home.

Phillip Athanasos is in custody after allegedly beating an 81-year-old woman at Pine Lodge nursing home in South Australia, 7 News reported.

Athanasos, who has been a carer at the facility for more than eight years, is accused of telling the woman she would ‘never cause any trouble again’ as he covered the 81-year-old’s mouth a court heard.

The woman was taken to Flinders Medical Center with two bleeds in the brain and bruising on her neck and face on Sunday, The Advertiser reported.

‘The victim thought she was going to die so she fought him off with her fists and hands,’ police prosecutor Andrew Gilleard said.

The 45-year-old carer claimed he tried to help the woman up after she fell and he then fainted after seeing blood.

Although believed to be an isolated incident, Athanasos was suspended from his position at the Adelaide nursing home.

The 45-year-old was charged with aggravated assault and was refused bail on Wednesday.

The matter will return to court in April.
