Man behind Christmas display dies after falling off ladder

A Canadian man known for the grandiose Christmas decorations on his suburban Toronto home died Monday after falling off a ladder while inspecting the lighting.

Doug Musson, 82, fell and hurt himself outside his home in Burlington, Ontario on Monday.

He was rushed to an area hospital and was pronounced dead later that same day, CTV reported.

‘I looked behind me and I saw a ladder, so I thought, the ladder fell,’ his son, Robert Musson, told CTV Toronto.

‘Next thing I know, I look down and he’s two feet from me, lying on the ground.’

Every year around the holidays, neighbors admire Doug’s work, which earned his home the moniker ‘Griswold House.’

The nickname is a reference to the home from the 1989 movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Musson’s house includes a mix of green, red, and white lights that form the shapes of various Christmas-themed characters and objects.

Neighbors were saddened by the news of Doug’s sudden passing.

The Mussons said they considered switching the lights off for the season, but instead decided to leave the lights on to honor Doug Musson

‘I always came by with my children every Christmas for the last 25 years,’ Dianne Lemay said.

‘Doug Musson and his family have contributed to a special Christmas for many years,’ Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring said.

Doug’s wife, Joanne, said the Christmas decorations have become a family tradition that started over 30 years ago.

‘Doug and I both liked to stand up in the window upstairs and watch the faces of the little kids,’ she said.

‘He liked to see the people smiling,’ Robert said.

The Mussons said they considered switching the lights off for the season, but instead decided to leave the lights on to honor Doug.

‘He’s put all this work into things,’ Robert said. ‘We need to show people.’
