Man City teenager Rico Lewis ‘is set for a 400 per cent salary increase’ after Joao Cancelo’s exit

Teenager Rico Lewis is set to land a whopping 400 per cent salary increase in a new deal at Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola’s side begin to focus on their future without Portuguese international Joao Cancelo.

Cancelo, who completed his sudden and bitter exit to Bayern Munich on loan last week, is not expected to return to the Etihad at the end of the season after falling out with Guardiola over a lack of game time.

Although Cancelo featured in 26 games across all competitions for City before his departure, the star was used less frequently by Guardiola than in recent seasons, with the Spanish boss keen to give more opportunities to 18-year-old Lewis, who had impressed on his chance.

Starring in five of the last six Premier League matches under Guardiola, Lewis has chalked up eight league appearances so far this campaign.

He also became the club’s youngest ever goal scorer in the Champions League, netting in City’s 3-1 win against Sevilla in November.

Rewarding the youngster for his impressive start to the campaign, Manchester City are reportedly set to offer Lewis a pay increase from £5,000 per week to £25,000 per week in a fresh deal.

According to the Daily Star, the contract will tie the right-back down for the next five years at the Etihad. 

Following Cancelo’s acrimonious exit, Guardiola has been hit with a shortage of players at full-back, with only Kyle Walker, Lewis and summer signing Sergio Gomez in the squad.

However, with centre-halves Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte capably deputising at left-back so far this campaign, City did not feel obliged to attack the market in pursuit of a full-back on deadline day.

Bayern Munich have a £60million option to buy Cancelo permanently at the end of the campaign.
