A 22-year-old man is critically ill in hospital after crashing a car into a house while being chased by police.

The driver of the Toyota Auris had failed to stop for a marked Police vehicle at about 11.55pm last night.

During his attempted escape he crashed, sustaining serious head injuries.

Following the smash on Highgate Road in Bradford, West Yorkshire, he was rushed to Leeds General infirmary where he is being treated.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the incident had been automatically referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. 

Anyone who saw the Toyota prior to or during the incident should phone police on 101.
