A man has been killed after being struck by a police car on Christmas Day. 

The incident happened near the Wallasey Tunnel in Liverpool heading away from the city centre. 

The victim, who has not yet been named was struck by the police car around 6.50pm.

The Independent Office for Police conduct has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the man’s death. 

A witness told the Liverpool Echo that he saw the police car hit the pedestrian as he was crossing the road.

He said: ‘I was driving back towards the tunnels and was near McDonald’s when I saw a police car hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

‘I stopped my car and ran over to see if they were ok.

‘Two police officers were trying to help the man. 

‘I offered them a bottle of water in case they needed it but I didn’t want to get in their way.’ 

Merseyside Police confirmed they have referred the incident to the IOPC. 

The victim was pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital. 

A number of witnesses also confirmed that the police car had its blue lights flashing at the time of the collision and two officers attempted to give emergency first aid to the man.

A spokesperson for Mersyeside Police said: ‘We can confirm an investigation is currently underway following a fatal road traffic collision in Liverpool this evening, Tuesday, December 25.

‘At around 6.50pm, a collision occurred between a police vehicle and a male pedestrian on Scotland Road.

‘Emergency services attended and the pedestrian was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead.

‘The incident has been referred to the IOPC.’

The man has not yet been identified and work is ongoing to inform his next of kin of his death.

Scotland Road is currently closed to allow for an investigation to be carried out and drivers are being advised to avoid the area.
