Man dies and a woman is left fighting for her life after two cars collided

  • A man has died following a horror crash near Stoke-on-Trent this morning 
  • The man was being pursued by police for failing to stop moments before  
  • A woman was also in the car and is currently in a critical condition in hospital

A man has died and a woman has been left critically injured after a collision following an early morning police pursuit.

The man’s vehicle collided with another car on the eastbound side of the dual carriageway, between near Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, at around 6.15am today.

A woman, who was travelling with the man who died, was taken to hospital where she is in a critical condition. 

The occupants of the second vehicle were also taken to hospital, but had suffered only minor injuries.

The road was closed in both directions following the incident and it is expected to remain shut throughout the morning.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said officers were working to minimise disruption and appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

He added: ‘The Collision Investigation Unit are at the scene and we would ask for any member of the public with information about the incident to call 101 quoting incident number 177 of April 15.

‘Our teams will work as swiftly as possible to keep disruption to a minimum. 

‘The vehicle involved in the collision was being pursued by police officers for failing to stop prior to the incident occurring.

‘Due to our involvement before the collision, we have voluntarily referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.’
