A father allegedly drilled a hole in the front door of their western Sydney home to cover up his daughter accidentally shooting his young son using a homemade weapon, police claim.

Police allege the man, 41, rushed his son to hospital after being shot in the back, before returning to his Lurnea home to stage a drive-by shooting.

Ballistic testing will determine whether the father, who was known to police after discovering information he may be manufacturing guns, used a drill to stage the shooting.

He rushed the five-year-old to hospital, before leaving him to return to their house because he left the front door open and dropped his wallet on the lawn.

The father claims a member of his family recently won the lottery and it was a targetted attack. Police allege the 41-year-old instead attempted to cover up the incident by drilling a small hole in the door.
