Man gets $1.95M after toothpick hidden in his food

A 70-year-old man from Las Vegas has been awarded $1.95m after discovering he ate a bacon-wrapped scallop with a toothpick hidden inside it, resulting in emergency surgery in 2014.

Ronald Wood, 70, has been awarded $1.95m after discovering he ate a bacon-wrapped scallop with a toothpick hidden inside it at his local golf club, resulting in emergency surgery in 2014.

Ronald Wood, who is a regular member at the Canyon Gate Country Club, was concerned to see that his wife ate one of these scallops and had to retrieve a broken toothpick from her mouth.Las Vegas Review-Journal on Wednesday that they didn’t take it too seriously.

However, a few days later the 70-year-old, who has been a member at the club for more than 20 years, was in extreme discomfort and ended up being rushed to hospital for intense abdominal pain.

The golf club member, who was 67 at the time, was treated for a serious liver infection and was told his large intestine had ruptured.

According to Prince the surgeon discovered ‘an inch-long broken toothpick’ in his abdominal cavity.

This resulted in his gall bladder being removed and also a foot of Wood’s colon.

‘Three weeks later, he left with a colostomy bag, and went home with a catheter,’ Prince revealed.

Prince also said that Wood, who has had at least three more surgeries, hasn’t been the same since the incident.

‘He’s mostly OK,’ the attorney said. ‘The problem is, you don’t fully recover after something like that. He’s not as physically active or strong. He doesn’t have as much stamina.’

Prince criticized the country club as he argued people naturally assume ‘their food to be safe.’

‘People have the right to expect their food to be safe,’ he said. ‘You don’t have to inspect it. That’s one of the responsibilities of the establishment – to ensure its safety.’

No one was available for comment on behalf of the establishment Wednesday.
