Man, 21, ‘grabs a woman, 24, and puts her in a headlock before trying to drag her into his ute in attempted abduction’

  • A 21-year-old man allegedly tried to abduct a woman in Queensland on Monday 
  • The accused approached the 24-year-old victim and put her into a headlock 
  • Police said he tried to drag her towards his parked ute before fleeing the scene
  • He was arrested after a police dog, named Griffin, tracked him into long grass 

A 21-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly tried to abduct a 24-year-old woman outside a Central Queensland hotel during the early hours of Monday.

The accused approached the woman, who was standing outside a North Rockhampton hotel, at 12.15am for directions and then put her into a headlock. 

He allegedly tried to drag the victim towards a nearby parked ute before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.

Police said the woman, who wasn’t injured, yelled for help and alerted nearby residents. 

‘When the man saw other people approaching, he released the woman and fled the scene in the ute,’ police said in a statement. 

Officers pursued the ute south on the Bruce Highway at 1.30am and deployed a tyre deflation device 15 minutes later. 

Police dog Griffin and his handler tracked the accused into long grass before arresting him. 

The accused reportedly tried to kick the dog, who bit him on the leg.

He was taken to a hospital to treat the bite and was later charged with two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of assault police and one count each of deprivation of liberty. 

The 21-year-old man was also charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, burglary, evade police, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and unlicensed driving.
