A man has been charged after he allegedly punched a NSW police officer in the face and kicked an unmarked police car.

Two detectives were travelling in the vehicle when the 40-year-old man allegedly assaulted the driver through an open window at a traffic light in Newcastle’s CBD.

Police said the officers were preventing the man, who had ‘unleashed a violent outburst’ towards the occupants of a nearby car on Beaumont Street on Friday morning.

The officers blew their siren to get his attention.

‘In a response, the male directed his violent behaviour toward the detectives with an unprovoked attack, kicking the police vehicle and punching the driver through an open window,’ police said.

The incident was captured on dashcam.

The second officer got out of the car and challenged the man, but he fled the scene.

The officer used capsicum spray before arresting him after a brief chase.

Police said they have charged the accused with three offences, including assault police causing actual bodily harm, malicious damage and resist arrest.

He has been refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Saturday.

Police said the injured detective was treated at John Hunter Hospital for bruising and swelling.
