A man has been charged after an elderly woman was found with fatal stab wounds in the front yard of her home in Brisbane’s northwest.

The 40-year-old man from Victoria was arrested in dramatic scenes at Brisbane International Airport at 6.25pm on Monday.

He has been charged with murder (domestic violence offence).

Police will allege the woman and man were known to each other.

Emergency services rushed to a home on Chestnut Place, in The Gap, at about 4.20pm on Monday where the woman was found unresponsive and declared deceased.

Detective Acting Inspector Mick Jones said the scene was confronting for first responders and witnesses on the usually quiet street.

Queensland Police ‘scrambled’ to form a team after the man was seen by members of the public leaving the home on Monday afternoon.

A police helicopter and the dog squad were deployed to hunt the man down, who was located and arrested at Brisbane Airport.

‘It was an excellent response by everybody involved,’ Acting Inspector Jones said.

‘It was a rapidly evolving situation which involved a number of police methodologies to locate that person in such a quick period of time.

‘I think the important thing is that the residents of The Gap here can be safe and knowing that there’s no one outstanding and there’s no danger to anyone here in the community.’

It remains unclear how the man travelled to the airport.

The 40-year-old recently caught the attention of authorities for an unrelated matter but was not well-known to police or subject to a domestic violence order.

He has been remanded in custody and is due to front Brisbane Magistrates Court on March 25.

Investigations are continuing.
