Thirteen people are shot after gun fire breaks out following a fight among a crowd of 200 people on an Illinois waterfront

  • Police in Peoria, Illinois, said 13 people were wounded when gunfire erupted as a crowd of 200 people gathered on the city’s waterfront early Sunday 
  • Cops said they believe there were multiple shooters on the Peoria Riverfront when bullets were fired about 4.41am
  • One man found shot in the neck and a woman who was shot in the back were taken to a hospital for serious injuries, police said
  • Another 11 people transported themselves privately to hospitals for gunshot wounds to their extremities 
  • Police said none of the injuries were life threatening and have asked the public’s help in identifying suspects  

At least 13 people were wounded when shots fired after a fight broke out during a gathering of 200 people on a riverfront in Peoria, Illinois, early Sunday, police said.

Cops responded to a large fight in the area of Water Street and Hamilton Street on the city’s waterfront about 4.41am to discover six men and seven women suffering from gunshot wounds.

One man was found shot in the neck and a woman in the back, according to a statement released by the Peoria Police Department.

Both victims were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Another 11 people who were shot in their extremities transported themselves by private means to local hospitals, police said. 

None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, police said. 

A  department spokesperson told WMBD that there were multiple shooters involved.

Cops are currently working on identifying suspects, the spokesperson said.

Police said the violence erupted after a dispute broke out between groups who were at the waterfront. 

Details of why the groups were gathered were not released.

The gathering along the riverfront came as Illinois was among states which have started to reopen after mandated lockdowns were ordered because of COVID-19.

While a stay-at-home mandate has ended in Illinois, restrictions remain on gatherings. State health officials will only allow gatherings of 50 people or less, and are still calling for social distancing. 

There have been more than 163,000 cases in Illinois of the coronavirus, which has been blamed for more than 7,400 deaths.

In Peoria County, where Peoria is located, there have been more than 800 cases of COVID-19, which has been blamed for more than two dozen deaths.

Across the country, there have been more than 3.7 million cases of the virus, which has been blamed fore more than 140,000 deaths.
