Man killed as car being chased by police rams into a lamp post

Passenger, 23, is killed with driver and friend in hospital after car slams into lamppost during high-speed police chase

  • Police were chasing a car in Burnley, Lancashire around 1.25am today 
  • During the pursuit, the car mounted the pavement and hit a lamp post 
  • The front seat passenger was killed in the collision and two other are in hospital
  • Local police have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct

A 23-year-old has died after a car that was being followed by police crashed into a lamppost.

The man, from Burnley, was the front-seat passenger in a vehicle carrying three men, Lancashire Police said.

He died at the scene.

The driver and backseat passenger are being treated for injuries at Royal Preston Hospital.

The incident happened on Colne Road in Burnley, shortly before 1.25am on Saturday.

Police had made a request for the car to stop and officers were following it before the collision, the force said.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for investigation.

Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Ashton said: “Our thoughts are with the families of these men at this incredibly difficult time. We have specially trained officers supporting them.
