A man has reportedly killed himself and his ex-partner after a home-made bomb in a shoe box exploded outside a children’s play area in northern Spain.

Two bodies were discovered in a holiday resort in Orio, close to the Basque city of San Sebastian, at around 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The incident is being treated as a case of sexist violence, according to local media.

Detectives believe the man, found on the ground by a bench, was carrying a bomb in a shoe box.

The woman being described as his ex-partner was found dead on the bench with injuries including head wounds.

Police cordon off the area where a man and a woman died in a suspected bomb blast

She is understood to have had a brief relationship with her suspected killer which ended recently. Neighbours who knew her have described her as a ‘kind’ woman.

A passer-by who was by the bench when the explosion occurred was also injured.

Inigo Urkullu, President of the Basque Government, who described what happened as ‘tragic’, confirmed on Tuesday evening that the two deaths could be linked to an incident of sexist violence. However, he insisted the ongoing investigation was still at an early stage.

He called what had happened ‘tragic’ and invited a minute’s silence at an election campaign meeting he later attended.

Speaking before the start of an election campaign meeting, he said: ‘We arrive at this meeting with pain and sadness in the face of a tragic incident which has occurred this afternoon in Orio with two people dead allegedly as the result of sexist violence.’

Orio, a typical Basque fishing village with around 6,000 inhabitants, gets very crowded in summertime when visitors flock to the area.
