A 49-year-old man is fighting for life after a horrifying home invasion in Merewether, Newcastle.
Police were called to a residence on Coane Street at about 3am on Tuesday following reports of a home intrusion.
Four teenage intruders entered the home, leading to a confrontation with the homeowners.

During the scuffle, the 49-year-old was stabbed in the abdomen, and the intruders fled.
The injured man was rushed to John Hunter Hospital in critical condition, while a 75-year-old woman with minor injuries also received treatment.
Shortly after, police arrested five teenagers, two boys and three girls, believed to be connected to the incident.
They are currently cooperating with authorities at Newcastle Police Station.
