Man sets himself on fire in Granville State School, Brisbane while on the run from police

A man who was on the run from police allegedly doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire at a school.

The man is fighting for life in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. 

Police allege he ran away from officers in Granville, about 250km north of Brisbane, late on Tuesday night. When they found him again, he had entered the grounds of Granville State School and was carrying a jerry can and lighter. 

As officers approached and tried to reason with him, they allege he poured petrol all over himself and set himself alight.

He was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition.

A police spokesman said officers were called to a Granville park about 11pm on Tuesday.   

‘Officers attempted to communicate with the man, however the incident resulted in the male igniting,’ the spokesperson said. 

The school released a statement to parents and families explaining an ‘incident occurred on school grounds overnight’. 

‘Police will be in attendance all day,’ the statement read. ‘The school day will continue as per normal routine.’

The incident is currently being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command.
