A man who pulled a gun on police at an engagement party has died after officers shot him in the leg at a home in northern Sydney.

Police were called to a domestic violence-related incident at a granny flat in Ingleside just after 9.30pm on Saturday and attempted to speak to the 53-year-old,  Jacob Carr.

Fifty people were at the address celebrating Brodie McInnes and Kila Maino’s engagement party when police attended the scene after reports Carr had strangled his mother. 

Police were called to a domestic violence-related incident at a granny flat in Ingleside (pictured) just after 9.30pm on Saturday and attempted to speak to the 53-year-old, Jacob Carr, who was allegedly involved

Acting Assistant Commissioner Julie Boon told reporters on Sunday that the man was armed and pointed an unregistered shot gun at officers.

Police then fired one round at the man’s leg, she added.

The 53-year-old was treated for first aid at the scene before he was taken to Royal North Shore hospital in a critical condition.

He died a short time later.

‘We are very concerned for the welfare of the three officers involved and appropriate action will be taken to support those police,’ Ms Boon said. 

Mr Carr is believed to be a relative of one of the people that were celebrating their engagement. 

A critical incident investigation has been launched.
