Man United could offer Sergio Romero to Aston Villa as they try to secure Jack Grealish deal

Man United could offer Sergio Romero to Aston Villa as they try to secure Jack Grealish deal with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperate to inject fresh energy into his squad for new season

  • Man United could offer the back-up keeper in any negotiations for Grealish
  • Romero has played mainly in the Europa League this season for Solskjaer’s side
  • But with Dean Henderson’s return from loan, Romero will be down pecking order
  • United plan talks with Villa over Grealish, who is valued by his club at £70m

Manchester United may offer goalkeeper Sergio Romero as part of negotiations for Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.

The Argentine has been excellent as cover for David de Gea but is eager to play more regular competitive football and, with Villa in the market for another goalkeeper, United will explore the possibility of putting Romero into their bid for Grealish.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been impressed by Dean Henderson’s performances on loan at Sheffield United and wants to give him the chance to provide fresh competition for De Gea.

Solskjaer believes the hunger Henderson has to become No 1 will add extra bite to the goalkeeping situation, potentially bringing the best out of De Gea too.

United have still to agree a new deal for Henderson, who is due back at United’s training ground on Wednesday, though talks are expected soon.

The 22-year-old has two years left on contract and is understandably eager to carry on playing regularly after his stand-out season at Bramall Lane. Convincing him he will get enough opportunities at Old Trafford will be key for Solskjaer.

Sheffield United are progressing with their efforts to sign Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale today after having their £18.5million bid accepted last Friday.

Chris Wilder moved on after accepting Henderson was unlikely to be returning to them on loan.

Manchester United have fielded a number of enquiries for Henderson with Aston Villa understood to be among those interested. However, United will see if a deal can be done with Romero instead as part of planned negotiations for Grealish.

The 33-year-old Romero is highly regarded at United and many believe he deserved more opportunities when De Gea’s form faltered. He has drawn interest from other Premier League sides and is open to a new challenge.

Though transfer talks have been focusing on Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, Grealish is still very much wanted by Solskjaer.

United have had a heavy workload with the amount of games they played towards the end of the season and know they face a tough task to inject fresh impetus into a tired squad with such a short turnaround for the new campaign.

After qualifying for the Champions League again they want to make an impact on the competition as well as improve their Premier League form.

Solskjaer believes the energy and confidence Grealish would bring can lift the squad.

Though places are at a premium when Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes are fit, Solskjaer knows he needs greater squad depth as well as quality while there could yet be departures for the likes of Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Juan Mata and Phil Jones.

United still have to meet Villa’s £70million valuation for Grealish of course but talks are expected to develop over the coming weeks with the 24-year-old Aston Villa captain ready for the move after keeping the club in the top flight last season.

Villa do not need the cash but are planning an overhaul of their squad ahead of the new season.

Brentford’s Ollie Watkins is a prime target while manager Dean Smith also wants a winger, midfielder, right-back and centre-back.
