Manchester United’s injury crisis has been dealt another blow after a first-team regular was forced to return from international duty early with illness.

The international break has so far been unkind to Erik ten Hag with his squad weakened by injuries to Harry Maguire, Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and Noussair Mazraoui all sidelined with problems.

United’s dismal Premier League start has left them 14th in the Premier League standings and injuries are only likely to further cause a selection headache for Ten Hag and his coaching team.

Amad Diallo can now be added to United’s unavailable list of players after withdrawing from the Ivory Coast squad and will now return to Manchester early.

The 22-year-old was set to play an integral role in upcoming AFCON qualifying matches against Sierra Leone, but now won’t feature after being sent home.

Diallo is suffering from an illness and will instead remain at home in England while he recovers in what is hoped to be only a short-term worry for Ten Hag.

The United boss has regularly trusted Diallo this season who is quickly becoming a fan favourite after breaking into the first-team last season as United won the FA Cup.

He has started four of United’s seven opening league clashes after being trusted as a right-wing starter but often being swapped with Alejandro Garnacho while Marcus Rashford remains on the left.

Diallo opened his Premier League goals account for the season with a superb strike against Brighton that ultimately proved worthless as United went on to lose 2-1.

The Ivorian’s arrival previously raised eyebrows in 2021 when he joined as an unknown youngster in a £37m move from Italian side Atalanta.

He initially trained with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team before eventually being sent out on various loan deals to gain more senior experience.

Rewarding spells at both Rangers and Sunderland eventually saw him recalled and named in United’s Premier League squad for last season as Ten Hag promoted the talent.
