Manchester United ‘keeping tabs on Thomas Tuchel if they sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the coming weeks… and PSG boss would be keen on a move to Old Trafford’

  • Manchester United have struggled for consistency under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
  • Their latest setback came in midweek in the Champions League defeat by PSG
  • Thomas Tuchel’s contract at the Ligue 1 champions runs out in June next year
  • And reports now claim he feels he is ready to take over at the Old Trafford helm

Manchester United could move for Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel if they sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the next few weeks, according to reports in Germany.

After taking over on a caretaker basis in December 2018, Solskjaer signed a three-year contract in March 2019, but the 18 months since have seen constant inconsistency in form in the Premier League and Europe.

Their latest setback came with a 3-1 defeat in the Champions League to the French champions in midweek, leaving United’s hopes of securing qualification for the knockout stages in the balance.

And according to BILD, should they fail to qualify from Group H, the club are keeping tabs on the German, who they claim will probably leave the Parc des Princes at the end of the season when his contract expires.

The report adds that no talks have taken place but it is no secret in Paris that the former Borussia Dortmund boss feels he is ready to take the step and manage in the Premier League.

The same outlet insists that in the past there has been contact between Tuchel and United about taking over at the Old Trafford helm.

The 47-year-old has been under pressure this season and has faced constatnt questions about his future ever since he fell out with PSG sporting director Leonardo in the summer after taking aim at the club’s lack of spending in the transfer window.

After the manager publicly criticised the club’s business in the transfer market, Leonardo hit back. ‘We did not like these statements,’ said the sporting director.

‘The club did not like them and neither did I. If he decides to stay, he needs to respect the board’s strategy.’

Mauricio Pochettino is also reportedly a prime candidate to take over from Solskjaer if United decide to sack the Norwegian.

But reports earlier this week claimed the Argentine in fact could replace Tuchel at PSG due to his fondness for the city and the interesting project at the club.

Solskjaer came under further fire this week from former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan, who claims the Norwegian ‘represents mediocrity’ and called for him to leave Old Trafford.

‘I wouldn’t have employed him in the first place because I think he represents mediocrity,’ Jordan told talkSPORT.

‘He is a thoroughly decent football person, but Manchester United don’t need a thoroughly decent football person, they need an excellent football person that is capable of taking them to the next level…

‘We are now two years – not two minutes, not twenty games – two years into a tenure where he got a pass at the back end of last season, which has distorted the view of what Manchester United really are.

‘They are a very average side with some very highly-priced footballers that aren’t performing at the level that Manchester United should be performing at.’
