At the time of his arrest, Lu had a life jacket that he had bought at Walmart.

Police believe that Lu planned to use the life jacket to swim the Niagara River and escape to Canada, according to the Niagara Falls Reporter.

Authorities said Lu had first tried to convince a bus driver into letting him hide in the luggage compartment for a bus that was heading to Canada.

The bus driver refused and immediately called police.

Authorities said Yang, 31, was waiting for her seven-year-old son to finish with school when Lu launched his attack around 12.20pm.

A neighbor heard what was happening in their apartment and promptly called 911.

But by the time police arrived, Lu was gone.

Yang was rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically-induced coma.

Authorities said doctors were able to reattach her arm, according to New York Daily News.

Neighbors of the couple said they have school-aged children, have lived in their apartment for about two years, and have not been very socially active.

Lu will be taken back to New York by early Sunday, police said.
