Manchester Airport holidaymaker, 32, is jailed for foul-mouthed homophobic rant

Drunk holidaymaker, 32, is jailed for nine months after launching foul-mouthed homophobic rant at airline worker as he boarded flight from Manchester Airport to Rhodes

  • Joshua Kilpatrick, 32, called victim a ‘c*** sucking f*****’ at Manchester Airport
  • HGV driver had to be escorted off the flight and resisted arrest on July 7, 2018
  • Jailing him for nine months, judge said the behaviour ‘was not out of character’

A drunken holidaymaker who subjected a male flight attendant to a foul mouthed homophobic rant was jailed for nine months today.

Joshua Kilpatrick, 32, went berserk after the cabin crew officer asked him to stop swearing in front of children as he got on the Thomson flight to Rhodes in Greece.

The HGV driver, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, called the victim a ‘c*** sucking f*****’ and had to be escorted off the flight by Manchester Airport police.

As he was hauled away from the aircraft he also shouted ‘fat c***’, ‘fat pr***’ and ‘f***ing c***’ at the cabin manager.

Passengers looked on in horror as he resisted arrest, shoved a police officer, and asked of one attending officer ‘who do you think you are?’ during the outburst.

He also told the officers that they ‘better get more mates’ as the moved in to arrest him.

It emerged Kilpatrick had a string previous offences for violence including affray and domestic assault for which he had been to jail on both occasions.

At Manchester Crown Court Kilpatrick admitted affray following the incident on July 7 last year.

Judge David Stockdale QC told him: ‘Violent, aggressive and abusive behaviour of this sort on a aircraft simply cannot be tolerated, passengers are intimidated by it and they are put in obvious fear for their safety and wellbeing.

‘Passengers cannot simply walk away, they are forced by circumstances to endure the behaviour of people like you.

‘The courts must play their part and will play their part in protecting the public from behaviour of this kind.’

He went on to say that his behaviour ‘was not out of character’ as ‘you don’t learn from past experiences’ and have an uncontrolled temper, particularly after drinking.

Defence barrister John Marsh said the tirade was ‘not based on a presupposition of the cabin manager’s sexual orientation’.

He added: ‘He has dreadful difficulty controlling his temper if he has had a drink. That is the problem with this man he is like a donkey with strawberries, he can’t have one drink he has to have many.’

After the case Det Sgt Alex Wild, from GMP’s Manchester Airport CID, said: ‘Kilpatrick’s actions caused other passengers distress and needlessly gave many of them a rocky start to their holiday.

‘Not content with just swearing loudly on a plane full of children, he then decided to start hurling abuse at a cabin crew member before getting physical with police.

‘The judge remarked during the hearing that this was a deterrent sentence imposed to act as a warning to others about behaving badly on an aircraft.

‘I want to echo those words and hope this will send a clear message that this kind of behaviour will simply not be tolerated.’
