Marca have now reported that Manchester City have scouted the Spanish defender ‘for a long time’ and are ‘well positioned’ to sign him.
The report states that the club made contact with Torres’ entourage last summer.
It was previously reported that Torres rejected an offer from Tottenham in the summer window to stay at the club, who would otherwise have been willing to sell him for around £55m.

Manchester City have a well stacked defence including the likes of Aymeric Laporte currently
Although Man City have plenty of options at the centre-back position, they are aware that with such fierce competition a player may wish to leave to get regular first team football.
Speculation arose over Laporte’s future in the summer after he was behind both Dias and Stones in the pecking order as City romped home to the league title.
Torres was a mainstay of Villarreal’s side last season, making 44 appearances as Unai Emery’s side finished seventh in LaLiga and won the Europa League.
He also represented Spain at the Tokyo Olympics and won the silver medal.
