A fire has broken out on the ninth floor of a 12 storey apartment block in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

Flames and smoke has affected several floors of the building but it is not clear if there have been any casualties.   

The apartment block is situated close to Afflecks Palace, an indoor market situated on the next street.

Manchester Fire have said that 12 fire engines are in attendance. 

In a statement, the Manchester Fire Department said: ‘We’re currently tackling a fire on the 9th floor of a 12 storey building on Joiner Street in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

The public are advised to avoid the area and a number of roads have been sealed off by police.

One witness told the Manchester Evening News: ‘ ‘It looks like a very big fire.

‘There are police and ambulances and fire engines everywhere.

‘The fire is about half way up the building – it looks serious.’
