Manchester pensioner punched 80-year-old man four times

Raymond Trott, 75, was ordered to pay £200 to victim, 80-year-old John Dale, after he followed him into a pub’s toilets and punched him up to four times in the face

A hell-raising OAP has been shamed as a bar-room brawler at the age of 75 after he beat up a man of 80 who he bumped into at their local pub.

Raymond Trott followed John Dale into the gentleman’s toilets after a heated argument at the bar then punched the victim up to four times in the face.

Staff at the Nags Head pub in Eccles, Greater Manchester – where the two pensioners had been regulars – had to treat Mr Dale for a gash to his eye whilst Trott was thrown out and barred.

Police who investigated the row spoke to both men but neither could remember what caused the argument.

At Manchester magistrates court, Trott, from Salford, admitted common assault and was ordered to pay £200 compensation to Mr Dale and complete 60 hours unpaid work.

District Judge Mark Hadfield told him: ‘This was an unprovoked attack and frankly you were both old enough to know better.

‘This is a serious matter, especially due to the fact it was an assault in a licensed premises. However, due to your age, I will lessen the sentence.

‘The probation team will look for lighter duties for you to attend to, and if you fail to carry out your unpaid work you will be brought back before the court.’

The bust up occurred in March whilst Trott – who claims to only go out on a Friday or Saturday night – had been drinking in the pub when he encountered Mr Dale and began talking to him.

Prosecutor Andrew Hey said: ‘Both had both been drinking in the pub and they both exchanged a few words and things got a bit heated. Neither of them can remember what the argument was about.

‘Mr Dale then went to the gents toilets and the defendant followed shortly behind. Mr Trott then assaulted him by punching him four times to the face. Both individuals were in their 70’s and I’ve been told that the complainant has now turned 80.

‘The complainant left the toilet and was treated at the bar by the staff assistants whilst the defendant was asked to leave.

‘He has since been barred from these premises. Mr Dale received a 2cm laceration to his left eye and has since had it glued back.

The court heard Trott had an disclosed previous conviction from over 20 years ago.

His lawyer Adrian Palmer said: ‘We can assume this complainant is vulnerable, but I have not seen him, so I wouldn’t know.

‘Mr Trott keeps himself to himself, he wouldn’t be in need of a curfew as he doesn’t go out. He only goes out to socialise on a Friday and Saturday evening.

‘He is fit enough to do unpaid work. It will give him something to do to keep him out of other situations like this. He does have a record, but it is over 20 years old and I don’t think it would be relevant to this court today.’

Trott was also ordered to pay £300 court costs and was made subject of a restraining order banning him from contacting Mr Dale.
