Manchester United: Erik ten Hag ‘plans to move for Ajax winger Antony at Old Trafford’

Manchester United-bound manager Erik ten Hag to ‘make instant raid on current club Ajax’ with the Dutchman ‘targeting £50m-rated Brazil winger Antony as one of his first deals at Old Trafford’

  • Erik ten Hag is expected to be appointed as Manchester United’s new manager
  • Reports have suggested he could bring an Ajax star along to Old Trafford
  • He is interested in signing exciting Brazilian winger Antony for the Red Devils
  • The 22-year-old who was signed in 2020 could be available for around £50m

Erik ten Hag is reportedly planning a raid on current club Ajax should he land the permanent role at Manchester United.

The Dutchman is expected to be announced as the next manager of the Red Devils, replacing interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.

It has been reported by the Sun that should Ten Hag get the role, he plans to make a move for exciting Brazilian winger Antony.

The 22-year-old who is valued at around £50million has been targeted for ‘phase one’ of United’s rebuild under Ten Hag this summer.

Ten Hag is eager to hit the ground running at Old Trafford and is said to believe that Antony is a ‘ready-made fit’ for his new look United.

One benefit that Antony would have is that he knows Ten Hag’s style of football, having held a regular place in the Ajax over the past two seasons.

The exciting winger joined the club for £18million in February 2020 and has gone on to score 22 goals in 79 appearances.

This season he has managed double figures in terms of both goals and assists, netting on 12 occasions and registering 10 assists.

His performances alerted the national team where he has already made nine appearances and scored two goals.

It’s said Ten Hag believes it makes business sense to sign Antony this summer, rather than risk seeing his value soar at the World Cup if he impresses in Qatar later this year.

Antony was initially brought in as a replacement for Hakim Ziyech following the latter’s move to Chelsea.

Sportsmail reported on Saturday that Ten Hag will sign his new four-year deal with United this week with final details being completed.

The search for a suitable back-room team to support him will intensify this week with Rene Meulensteen, United coach under Sir Alex Ferguson, the latest to be linked with a role.

Ten Hag is expected to bring his Ajax assistant Mitchell van der Gaag but also wants another assistant who knows the club well, with Robin van Persie having also been offered a job, but likely to stay in Holland at Feyenoord because of family commitments.

With five games left of the Dutch season – Ajax are four points clear of PSV at the top – Ten Hag is unlikely to comment on his new job until the season is over and has been tetchy in exchanges with Dutch journalists who persist in bringing up the issue.
