Manchester United face more injury woe as striker Anthony Martial trains alone during France camp due to a back problem… and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces the prospect of being without Frenchman, Marcus Rashford AND Mason Greenwood for West Brom

  • Manchester United may be forced to play West Brom without Anthony Martial
  • He failed to take part in a French training session on Monday due to a back injury
  • Martial could also be ruled out of France’s Nations League game against Sweden
  • Martial will undergo an individual session to assess whether he will be fit to play
  • The result could see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer without three of his top players

Manchester United could be without Anthony Martial after the French striker picked up a back injury on international duty.

Martial failed to take part in France’s team training session on Monday due to a back complaint and could miss the opportunity to face Sweden on Tuesday night.

It is believed Martial will undergo an individual session to assess whether he will be able to take part in the Group A3 fixture taking place at the Stade de France.

Martial started for Didier Deschamps’ side in their 1-0 win over Portugal, but was substituted in the 78th minute.

The news comes as a blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – who can’t afford to lose another game after slipping to 14th in the league after seven fixtures.

Martial was due to return from international duty to feature in United’s Premier League meeting with West Brom on Saturday.

However, Martial could be forced to join Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood on Solskjaer’s ever-growing injury bench.

Rashford has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury that he sustained during United’s vital 3-1 win over Everton earlier in the month.

Rashford was also forced to withdraw from Gareth Southgate’s England squad due to his injury, but he is said to be back to 50 per cent fitness.

Greenwood’s participation in Saturday’s fixture with West Brom is said to be touch and go due to illness. The youngster is said to be around 75 per cent fit for the game.

As a result, Solskjaer may have to rely on Edinson Cavani – who came off the bench to score the final goal in United’s clash with Everton on November 7.

As for Didier Deschamp – he could be forced to field a weaker forward line than he would have anticipated for their fixture against Sweden.

Deschamps is yet to declare whether Kylian Mbappe will feature in Les Bleus’ Nations League game with Sweden.

Mbappe was ruled out of their game against Portugal due to a thigh strain he suffered against Nantes on October 31.

Should both Martial and Mbappe be absent against Sweden, the responsibility could fall to Chelsea's Olivier Giroud.

Giroud has been the topic of many conversations over the past few weeks with Deschamps urging the country’s second-highest goalscorer to seek a move if he wants to improve his chances of adding a possible Euro 2020 title to his 2018 World Cup crown.

The 34-year-old striker has made just one start under Frank Lampard this season, playing a total of just 33 minutes in the Premier League.
