Manchester United fans split over Zinedine Zidane potentially replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United fans split over Zinedine Zidane replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with some warning former Real Madrid boss ‘is NOT the answer’ and club should look to appoint Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag instead

Manchester United fans appear split over the possibility of Zinedine Zidane replacing Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in the Old Trafford dugout.

United crumbled to a 4-1 defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday, extending their dismal run of form to four defeats in the last five Premier League games.

According to the Times, United’s hierarchy have called an urgent meeting on Saturday evening to determine whether to stick with Solskjaer or relieve him of his duties.

Zidane has reportedly emerged as the number one target for United to replace the Norwegian, but his appointment would not be unanimously welcome if social media reactions are anything to go by.

Several United fans would welcome the Frenchman with open arms, with one United fan on Twitter suggesting the former Real Madrid boss would be the perfect man to get the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Others, meanwhile,  pointed out United had left themselves in a ‘Zidane or bust’ situation after opting to stick with Solskjaer while Tottenham appointed Antonio Conte earlier this month.

Zidane won the Champions League in three consecutive season – the only manager in the history of the competition to pull off the feat – in his first spell in charge of the Spanish giants, along with two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cups.

After leaving the club at the end of the 2017-2018 season, the 1998 World Cup winner returned to the Santiago Bernabeu halfway through the following campaign and led Los Blancos to the title a year later.

Conversely, other United fans believe the 49-year-old was not the right solution, despite his glittering CV.

Some suggested the Frenchman was not the answer and neither was Leicester City’s boss Brendan Rodgers, another manager who has been touted as Solskjaer’s potential successor.

Others, meanwhile, pointed out the squad Zidane could inherit at United lacks the quality he had at his disposal in Madrid, particularly in the middle of the park.

They also noted the former Juventus manager left Madrid when he felt it would be very hard to replicate the success of his first three seasons in charge.

The latter also pointed out United would be better off turning their attention towards Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag, one of European football’s most promising managers.

The Dutchman, however, has given no indication he would be prepared to leave the Amsterdam club, just like Rodgers poured cold waters on the speculation he might succeed Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

Similarly, it was previously understood that Zidane had no desire to take the reins at Old Trafford during mid-season.
