Gary Neville has claimed Antonio Conte’s negative style of play means he was never the right fit to be Manchester United manager – but Jamie Carragher has reminded him that he backed Diego Simeone for the job.
Although Conte has improved Tottenham – and his side held a previously rampant Liverpool to a draw on Saturday night – his brand of football isn’t always the most pleasing on the eye.
The Italian was linked with the United job last year and Neville believes his style of playing wouldn’t have suited the fans, who expect free-flowing and attacking football.
Antonio Conte’s Tottenham side earned a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday night – but his approach didn’t win the favour of Jurgen Klopp, and Gary Neville (right) agreed
Neville spoke out on Twitter after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted he wasn’t a fan of Conte’s approach following his team’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Saturday night.
Klopp said: ‘I’m sorry I’m the wrong person for that, I don’t like this kind of football. But that’s my personal problem.
‘I think they’re world class, and I think they should do more for the game. I think the game against Liverpool they had 36, 38 per cent possession.
‘But it’s my problem. I cannot coach it. So that’s why I cannot do it.
‘So yes, world class players block all the balls, really difficult. Atletico Madrid is doing it. Fine, they won whatever.
‘Fine, absolutely fine. I just can’t. I respect everything they do, but it’s not me.’
Quote tweeting a video clip of Klopp making these remarks, Neville wrote: ‘I respect Conte and his football enormously but this Klopp interview gives the clear reason why he wasn’t the right fit for United.’

Neville’s Sky sparring partner Jamie Carragher hit back, reminding him he’d backed Diego Simeone for the United job. But Neville insisted Simeone would have been a good fit
Neville’s Sky Sports colleague Carragher then replied to this with a screengrab of a headline that read: ‘Gary Neville calls for ‘brutal’ Diego Simeone to be considered for next Manchester United manager.’
But Neville doubled down on his original remarks by responding: ‘Simeone 4-4-2 aggressive style. Proper United that. Conte wing backs?? No.’
United lingered too long in sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in November, allowing Tottenham the chance to appoint Conte.
When United did dispense with Solskjaer later that month, they opted to bring in Ralf Rangnick as an interim coach before appointing Erik ten Hag as their next permanent manager last month.

Ten Hag’s commitment to easy-on-the-eye football at Ajax will no doubt please Neville as United look to rebuild from a dreadful season.
They will finish at least one place below Tottenham after Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Brighton represented a fresh low in a season full of them.
